Hashimoto's Thyroiditis Care in Salisbury, MD: Thyroid Antibodies Down to Undetectable
A woman in her mid-20s came to Remedy Longevity & Cellular Medicine in Salisbury, MD with brain fog, exhaustion, aching joints, constipation, and changes to her skin, hair, and nails. Labs showed she was overwhelmingly hypothyroid with high thyroid antibodies — autoimmune Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Over several months on an autoimmune paleo (AIP) diet, low-dose naltrexone, and targeted thyroid and autoimmune support, her thyroid antibodies dropped to an undetectable level, and her energy, joints, weight, and mental clarity improved substantially.

The Full Story, in Our Clinician's Words
I have a patient who is in her mid-20s and she comes to the practice and she has been concerned about recent mental fatigue, brain fog. She's feeling exhausted and tired throughout the day. Just feels like she has no energy. Her joints are aching. She's dealing with constipation. She's dealing with other changes in regards to her skin, hair, and nails.
We did labs on this patient. We found that she is overwhelmingly hypothyroid with a high level of thyroid antibodies indicating autoimmunity, or autoimmune Hashimoto's thyroiditis. The first thing we did was we put this patient on an autoimmune paleo diet. This is a diet that's relatively stringent, and it's designed to reduce inflammation throughout the gastrointestinal tract to ultimately lower the inflammatory cascade that is going on in her body.
Through several months of being relatively regimented with her diet and also introducing some other therapies such as low-dose naltrexone and some other autoimmune and thyroid supports, we were able to significantly lower her thyroid antibodies down to an undetectable level, and she is feeling much better. She has had a substantial reduction in weight. Her joints are feeling lubricated — they're not giving her the pains that she was dealing with on a daily basis. Her brain fog has dissipated, and she now has the energy and the focus to get through her day as she desires.

Questions About This Case Study
What is Hashimoto's thyroiditis?
Hashimoto's is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system produces antibodies against the thyroid, often leading to hypothyroidism — with symptoms like fatigue, brain fog, joint aches, constipation, and skin, hair, and nail changes. It's identified through lab work that measures thyroid function and thyroid antibodies.
Can thyroid antibodies actually be lowered?
In this patient's case, yes — several months of an autoimmune paleo diet combined with low-dose naltrexone and targeted thyroid support brought her antibodies down to an undetectable level. Every case is different, which is why treatment starts with comprehensive labs and is adjusted based on follow-up testing.
What is low-dose naltrexone (LDN)?
Low-dose naltrexone is a medication used at a fraction of its standard dose, prescribed in functional medicine to help modulate immune activity and inflammation in certain autoimmune conditions. It was one component of this patient's plan alongside dietary change and thyroid support.
